There were approximately 195,500km of road network in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.
Of this figure, about 32,000km are Federal roads, while 31,000km are State roads.
Presently, most of these roads are deplorable as a result of poor maintenance culture, while the roads of the Local Governments are in very bad condition.
Sadly, interstate travels have actually become a near impossibility, even as rural transportation has become a nightmare, due to the worsening conditions of rural roads and stock routes.
Interestingly Government at all levels, annually, set aside billions of Naira for the construction and rehabilitation of roads, but till this moment, little or nothing is visible to show for it.
Of worry, is the fact that infrastructure have always been the major priority of Government, despite the reality that the debt profile of the country is already going out of reasonable limits, this is conscious of the fact that the Federal Government gave each State of the Federation 1 billion Naira to cushion the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Nigerians, regardless of religious persuasion, ethnic leanings and social status are unanimous in arguing that a lot has gone wrong.
